    Your Views

We asked for your views on Saturday's game between Manchester City and Newcastle.

Here are some of your comments:

    Manchester City fans

Ravi: Overall a good performance. Foden, Kovacic, Cole Palmer and Alvarez will do both the forward or attacking midfielder role in absence of KDB. Rodri and Bernardo Silva are the all-rounders.

Sam: Excellent result, especially after the exertions of the Super Cup on Wednesday. Foden was great and the defence was strong to keep the clean sheet. Bench was relatively weak, so if we can get a few more signings it’d be useful for the upcoming months. Onwards to Sheffield United next week!

Scott: This was one of our toughest tests, Newcastle are here to stay and compete at the pointy end of all competitions. The team is adjusting to the new and missing faces, as we know City do so well. Phil Foden played extremely well tonight. Alvarez was superb again with his fabulous goal. Nowhere near firing on all cylinders for City, but it is still August.

Marco: Wasn't the best performance from the lads, but not going to complain as City are masters of keeping the ball and dominating.

    Newcastle fans

Bobby: I felt a couple of the reliable players didn't turn up. Mainly Joelinton but Isak, Almiron and Bruno were also off it. City were amazing, but it wasn't the 'intensity is our identity' Newcastle we've come to expect. Second half was better but felt Newcastle were a bit too thuggish.

Richard: I’m going to sound ‘cup half full’ but I think we’ll be a lot better after this defeat. You know Eddie will analyse the hell out of the game. He’ll work out why we fluffed our lines and how to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Also, we lost by the smallest margin at the toughest place in the world to get a result because we played badly.

Geordie exiled in Yorkshire: I am happy with last night. A 1-0 defeat to City is nothing to be ashamed of, they are Treble- winning champions after all. Miggy and Joelinton weren't at the races but Barnes provided a touch of sparkle when he came on. We switched off and were punished, you can't do that against teams like City. Bring on Liverpool.

Andrew: Botman was more than a match for Haaland! We learnt that both defences out-performed both attacks. Sadly, City's midfield out-performed our midfield. Foden was the winning difference again.

  3. Analysis: Man City 1-0 Newcastlepublished at 01:06 20 August

Chris Bevan, BBC Sport at Etihad Stadium

There was more than a hint of regret in Eddie Howe's voice when he spoke about his side's defeat at the hands of the defending champions.

Newcastle's record at the Etihad is appalling - they have never won there in the league and the last time they even took a point was 2006. Before Saturday, they had lost 14 league games in a row, often heavily.

That record now reads 15 straight losses, but this latest one was by only one goal. That could be viewed as a positive given City's pedigree but, after Newcastle's recent progress, many were expecting more from them - in terms of their performance as well as the end result.

Certainly more attacking intent was anticipated, and also more shots at goal - the Magpies only managed one effort on target, from substitute Harvey Barnes after 70 minutes, and that was saved comfortably.

They can do much better up front, as we saw against Aston Villa last weekend.

Instead, Newcastle did what we already know they can do well - defend diligently and fight hard for the ball in midfield. They will need more ideas, and more ambition, to triumph when they play Liverpool at St James' Park next weekend.

  4. 'This is the level we want to be at'published at 22:24 19 August

    Kieran TrippierImage source, Getty Images

Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier to TNT Sports: "First half we were sloppy in possession. We tried to go after Manchester City but we need to be more consistent.

"We kept going and trying to find the equaliser but it wasn't to be. Phil has too much space in the pockets. There's a lot to work on. This is the level we want to be at,

"With the pace we've got there's always going to be a chance. The lads gave everything as always.

"We didn't drop our heads at 1-0 down. Some teams come here and lose two, three, four, five. We didn't concede again."

  5. Man City 1-0 Newcastle: Key statspublished at 22:24 19 August

    • Manchester City have now won each of their last 11 Premier League games at the Etihad Stadium – only once have they had a longer such run under Pep Guardiola (14 games between September 2017 and March 2018).

    • Newcastle have lost their last 15 games against City in the Premier League – their longest ever losing run away from home against an opponent in their league history.

    • Phil Foden created seven chances from open play in this match, his most in a single Premier League game.

    • Newcastle recorded just one shot on target at the Etihad Stadium. This is their join fewest in a Premier League game under Eddie Howe.

    • Manchester City didn’t make any substitutions in a Premier League game for the first time since May 2022, while it was just the sixth time in 268 league games in charge of the club that Guardiola hasn’t made any changes.

  6. Man City 1-0 Newcastle: What Howe saidpublished at 22:18 19 August

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe to BBC Sport: "Mixed [thoughts]. I thought there were some good bits. We had moments we could hurt them but didn’t have our quality. The second half was much better.

"There was a moment around 60-70 minutes in and I thought we could get control but they are a very good team and played through the press a few times. They strangle you with the ball to a degree. You tire yourself out getting it back and with fatigue the decision making goes slightly.

"There was an element of that but technically we were not where we needed to be. Collectively we were slightly off.

"I was frustrated we didn’t create more. The last pass was missing and we had a couple of shots from range but nothing glaring and that’s the frustration.

"We knew the start would be really difficult. We are confident and believe we can win anywhere but we need to bring our A game and we didn’t have that today."

  7. Full-time: Man City 1-0 Newcastlepublished at 22:00 19 August

    Have your say

Defending champions Manchester City reminded their title rivals they remain the team to beat by seeing off a determined Newcastle United side that have been touted as possible pretenders to their crown.

Julian Alvarez's brilliant first-half strike proved enough to maintain City's winning start to the Premier League season against a Magpies team who battled hard but possessed modest attacking threat for much of the match.

Phil Foden provided the creative sparkle for City in the absence of Kevin de Bruyne, who faces up to six months out after hamstring surgery this week.

The England playmaker set up Alvarez's goal and created more chances after the break, with Erling Haaland wasting the best of them when he fired wide.

Newcastle matched City in midfield and upset the home crowd with their physical approach, with Foden on the receiving end of a couple of heavy challenges.

  9. Sutton's predictions: Man City v Newcastlepublished at 11:15 19 August

Chris Sutton will be making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of rivals. Next up is DJ, producer and Newcastle fan Anish Kumar.

    Sutton's Predictions with Anish Kumar

    Sutton's prediction: 3-1

Newcastle threw a lot at City at the start of last season when they drew 3-3 at St James' Park and I think they will cause them lots of problems this time too.

City have not been near their very best so far this season, but still beat Burnley and overcame Sevilla on penalties to win the Uefa Super Cup.

Eddie Howe's side will ask very different questions to both of those sides and I am expecting another really good game.

I was tempted to go with a draw here because City played in midweek, but they are at home and they should come out on top, just about.

Newcastle are good, but they are not that good... although, as a fan, Anish should really be saying they will win.

Anish's prediction: It's hard to expect anything here but they say never back against your team so I'll be optimistic and say we can salvage a late draw with a Callum Wilson equaliser. No Maxi [Allan Saint-Maximin] this time to run them ragged like he did at St James' at the start of last season and City are strong, but I've got to put faith in Eddie and the boys. The Toon Army will fill out the away end as usual. 1-1

  10. Newcastle have 'got an absolute gem' in Hallpublished at 18:26 18 August

Total Sport Newcastle United Podcast graphic

In the latest BBC Newcastle United podcast, the team have been discussing the signing of Chelsea left-back Lewis Hall. True Faith podcaster Charlotte Robson said of the new recruit: "[Chelsea fans] are gutted and furious. I saw him play last season but don't know lot's about him and the Chelsea fans are just gutted.

"Someone I know who does a Chelsea podcast messaged me to say you've got an absolute gem there, that is a massive signing for you."

Newcastle United commentator Matthew Raisbeck also shared the excitement of the transfer: "If that's how Chelsea fans feel, sorry they're signing everyone else and they're breaking their own transfer records aren't they with Moises Caicedo, yet they're upset about losing an 18-year-old that's played just 10 times for their first team. That's the impact that he has made and what they will be losing to Newcastle.

"He's also the prefect profile for Eddie Howe who improves players. He improves young players, he improves players who are in their prime or should be in their prime that are years older than Lewis Hall.

"It makes perfect sense from a Newcastle point of view, less so from a Chelsea point of view, but because of the financial rules and profit and sustainability in the Premier League they would have to do it."

  11. Newcastle are 'extraordinary' - Guardiolapublished at 15:09 18 August

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has described Newcastle as an "extraordinary team" ahead of their clash at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

"They continue to do really well for a couple of seasons and they've bought perfect players for the way they play," said Guardiola.

"They are an extraordinary team. Playing three times a week is different to once a week; if they can handle the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup, they are contenders."

City narrowly clinched their first ever Uefa Super Cup title on Wednesday after beating Sevilla on penalties in Athens.

Guardiola has spoken openly about the struggles of replicating their historic Treble win.

He also says his side currently face the big challenge of overcoming injuries and were only able to do recovery work on Friday having arrived home from their Super Cup success at 4am.

"It is a challenge to prove ourselves again," he said. "It is never easy in sport, but we need that. Overcoming problems is what defines whether you are a good team or not.

"We need our people more than ever; we can not be in a stadium looking at how good we are because what we've done before. Tomorrow we need them, from the first minute they'll be important."

  12. Howe on Hall, Wilson and Manchester Citypublished at 10:27 18 August

    Joe Bradshaw, BBC Sport

Eddie Howe has been speaking to the media before Newcastle's trip to Manchester City on Saturday.

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Howe says he "likes" Chelsea defender Lewis Hall but would not comment on any potential move: "Let's wait and see what happens today. He is a player I like who is very versatile and has really good potential."

    • Newcastle are looking for one more signing - possibly Hall - and Howe confirmed any arrangement would be a loan deal.

    • He acknowledges how tough it is to choose between Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson: "It was a very difficult decision and one of those calls I didn't look forward to making. Fortunately, both performed really well [last week] and both are happy to be off the mark for the season."

    • On Wilson specifically and his reaction to being left out: "I expect nothing less from Callum and my relationship with him is very strong. You have to take a long-term vision. We won't have problems giving people games and opportunities. He will have a huge part to play this season, no doubt about it."

    • He is thrilled with Sandro Tonali's start: "He's settled in really well. He seems to have made an instant connection with the supporters and it reminds me of Bruno [Guimareas] when he arrived. When you get the love of the fans, it elevates you to a place you're not sure you would get to without it."

    • On a trip to Etihad Stadium where Newcastle have not picked up a point since 2006: "We look at this game as an opportunity to be our best. I want a positive mindset from our players and our supporters. That comes with the territory of being a team that expects to win every game and it is a message I try to drill home."

    • Nevertheless, he expects a rigorous challenge from the Treble winners, who won the European Super Cup on Wednesday: "I saw a team that was hugely motivated to win and that's the biggest compliment I can pay them. It shows they will not be complacent and will be ready for us. It will be a high-level game between two really good teams."

  13. Man City v Newcastle - Pick of the statspublished at 14:38 17 August

    • Manchester City have lost just one of their last 31 Premier League games against Newcastle (W25 D5), going down 2-1 at St. James' Park in January 2019.

    • Newcastle have never won in 18 Premier League games at the Etihad Stadium (D2 L16), with their last away league win against Man City at Maine Road in September 2000. It's the most any team has played at a specific venue without ever winning in Premier League history.

    • Following their 5-1 win over Aston Villa, Newcastle are looking to win both of their opening two games to a Premier League campaign for the first time since 1997-98.

    • Erling Haaland has scored 38 goals in 36 Premier League appearances, netting twice in Man City's opening day victory against Burnley.

    • Since the start of last season, Callum Wilson has scored more Premier League goals as a substitute than any other player (5), including his strike against Aston Villa on MD1.

  14. 'One that could go down to the wire'published at 08:14 17 August

Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards discusses whether Chelsea teenager Lewis Hall will be moving to Newcastle for £30m: "I find this an interesting story. At the beginning of this window, Newcastle were told in no uncertain terms that Chelsea would not deal with them on Hall and they do not have £30m to spend at this moment either. They have been pretty consistent on that both on and off the record.

"Newcastle do want a left-back and will target one before the end of the window but they would like a loan - with an option or obligation to buy - to help them with their Financial Fair Play obligations. Hall would tick all the boxes for Howe, being young and very good going forward.

"I don't think Chelsea planned to sell Hall this window but having spent nearly a billion pounds under Todd Boehly's kid-in-a-sweet-shop regime they have huge problems in balancing the books. Only selling players can help with that.

"I think this is one that could go down to the wire."

  15. Striker options 'a nice dilemma to have' for Howepublished at 16:55 16 August

    Newcastle expert view graphic

John Anderson, former Magpies defender on BBC Radio Newcastle

It's going to be really interesting to see who plays up front at Manchester City because Callum Wilson came on for Alexander Isak in the Aston Villa match and scored - and probably should have had a second himself too.

Will Howe stick with Isak as the number one striker - or will he rotate from game to game? It's a difficult decision because he's got two quality players there.

But they are also different types.

Wilson is more of a conventional centre forward who likes to go and battle and back in to defenders, and he brings other players into the game.

Isak runs the channels really well and likes to get into wide areas. He's also got more pace than Wilson.

They are different players but are both good at what they do.

It's great for the manager - and a nice dilemma to have.
