  2. PSV's Bosz & De Jong on pressure and Rangers being 'less of a grudge match'published at 18:11 21 August

    BBC Scotland's Jane Lewis

PSV Eindhoven Peter Bosz knows all about the atmosphere at Ibrox on European nights. He's been there to face Rangers twice - with Bayern Leverkusen and Lyon - and says "it's something special when the crowd get behind the team", adding it's "our job to keep the home fans quiet, and good football will do that".

Here's a summary of what the visiting coach and forward Luuk de Jong said before Tuesday's Champions League play-off first leg...

    • Bosz believes there's always pressure in these kind of games, but it's what teams like and it's why they are here.

    • He's come to Glasgow in relaxed and confident mood. PSV have won five from five games this season, including a convincing two-legged win over Sturm Graz in the third qualifying round, giving the manager "a lot of confidence".

    • De Jong says there's no talk of revenge among the PSV squad following the loss to Rangers this time last year but admits "last season was a disaster" for them, adding "lessons have been learned". He says different players and coaching teams make it less of a grudge match.

    • He's desperate to get through to the Champions League not just after missing out on it last term, but because "it's every kid's dream and playing in the competition is beautiful".

  3. Dessers hopeful 'big games' can 'show the best' of himpublished at 17:39 21 August

    dessersImage source, SNS

Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers is looking to pick up where he left off as he returns to European football against a familiar foe.

The Belgian-born Nigeria international is aiming to fire his new club into the Champions League group stage against PSV Eindhoven.

Dessers was top goalscorer in the 2021-22 Europa Conference League while on loan with Feyenoord, helping the Rotterdam side reach the final, before moving from Genk to Cremonese.

"These European nights are something extra, something special. I think they bring the best out of players because it’s the highest level," he said.

“I hope I can do the same here at Rangers. I’ve heard the European nights at Ibrox are really special so I’m really looking forward to my second experience after Servette."

Dessers has spent five seasons in Dutch football, also featuring for NAC Breda, Utrecht and Heracles, so he knows all about PSV.

“The last time I played against them with Feyenoord, I scored two times late on to make it 2-2,” he said.

"I hope in the coming two weeks I can show the best of me. I like these games, big games, and hope I can build on that reputation.”

  4. 'Rangers have not let themselves down in these types of games,' says Millerpublished at 17:27 21 August

Kenny Miller says it is "not of paramount importance" that Rangers win against PSV at Ibrox, because the Ibrox side can grind out results on the road.

The former striker says his old side will need to improve on performances so far this season, but expects a "tight" game on Tuesday night as PSV aim to get one back on their Scottish opponents.

"It's got the makings of a really good game when you see the way that Rangers have been playing so far, and PSV have hit the ground running," he said on the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast. "I think they're probably just slight favourites, but there's so much at stake in these games you just never quite know what can happen.

"It's been put out there quite openly by PSV that this is revenge.

"Rangers have not let themselves down in theses types of games in the last five seasons, they've been pretty good in play-off games and qualifying campaigns for Europe.

"It will be a tight affair, one which Rangers will need to be right at the top of their game, which means there will need to be improvements from the Servette game."

The ex-Scotland international added, though, that he doesn't think it is a must-win game.

"A win would be great, a convincing win would be even better but as long as they are still in the tie," he said.

"Rangers can go away and put in battling performances so I don't think it's of paramount importance that they get the victory, but I do think it's important that they don't get beat."

  7. 'You run back to Glasgow for these opportunities' - Bealepublished at 16:29 21 August

Michael Beale admits the possibility of managing Rangers in the Champions League was one of the key factors behind his decision to return to the club, as he urges side to go "hell for leather" at reaching the elite competition.

Beale was part of Steven Gerrard's backroom staff who competed in the Europa League, and reached the Last 16 of the competition in 2018, but Beale has his sIghts sets on the biggest table of all.

"Ultimately that's why you came back," he said as Rangers prepare to take on PSV in a repeat of last year's play-off.

"When the opportunity was there, you run back to Glasgow because that's part of being manager of this club, those opportunities that it gives you.

"I know when speaking to the players in the summer, this opportunity was huge. We knew we'd have to overcome two tough ties, and we've done one, now we've got a big challenge in the next 10 days or so.

"Everyone knows that that's the competition that players want to play in it. You want to put yourself against the best and I think our fans want to see the big nights here in Europe... and let's go hell for leather for that.

"If it's not that, then we'll go for the Europa League, but at this moment in time our full focus is on trying to qualify, of course."

  8. Beale on 'excellent' PSV, going 'hell for leather', and Hagi's futurepublished at 15:04 21 August

    Jane Lewis, BBC Sport Scotland

Rangers manager Michael Beale has been talking to the media ahead of his side's Champions League play-off first leg against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.

Here are the key lines from his press conference:

    • Believes that PSV are the "toughest team" Rangers could have played at this stage, and that the Dutch side are "excellent" in attack, but says it is a "fantastic opportunity" for everyone at the club.

    • Beale says no-one is thinking about the security and fall back of the Europa League, insisting they will go "hell for leather" to try and get into the Champions League.

    • Spoke about how playing in the Champions League was a big selling point for the club over the summer, but that now Rangers "have to show our quality and hurt [PSV]".

    • Backed the work done in the last two transfer windows, and believes the new signings are starting to settle now, pointing to Jack Butland's performances and forward players getting goals and assists.

    • Spoke about Cyriel Dessers' excellent personal record against PSV, who Beale says "looks stronger every day in training".

    • Ben Davies and Rabbi Matondo are in the European squad having previously missed out. Ianis Hagi is not selected - Beale says he's spoken to him about his future and says there could be some movement on that with "his agent working away in the background".

  9. PSV Eindhoven - what's changed a year on?published at 13:15 21 August

Much has changed since Rangers beat PSV 3-2 on aggregate in the 2022 Champions League play-off.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Ruud van Nistelrooy were the managers then, but have since been replaced, by Michael Beale and Peter Bosz, respectively.

Cody Gakpo was the PSV star at the start of last season, and was superb in the first leg of the tie, but Rangers don't have to worry about his threat this time around, with the Netherlands star having since moved to the Premier League with Liverpool.

That is not to say that Rangers' task will be an easy one. Despite the loss of Gakpo, and the disappointment of missing out on the riches of the Champions League, PSV went on to win the domestic cup, finished second in the Eredivisie behind Feyenoord, and have carried that momentum forward into this season.

They beat Feyenoord in the Johan Cruyff Shield to kick-off their 2023-24 campaign, and have a perfect record in the league to boot.

Bosz's side also contains some seriously good players. Ibrahim Sangare is a real all-rounder in midfield, Noa Lang is a handful out wide, and one man who Rangers fans need no introduction to is Malik Tillman.

The American midfielder set up Antonio Colak's winning goal in the second leg last season, but will be on the opposite side on Tuesday, after Rangers opted not to sign the Bayern Munich man on a permanent deal.

Will Tillman come back to haunt Rangers and Michael Beale, or will the Ibrox side overcome PSV for a second successive season to reach the Champions League group stages?

  12. Rangers 2-1 Greenock Morton: Your viewspublished at 18:08 20 August

    ur viewsImage source, BBC Sport

We asked you for your views after Rangers' Viaplay Cup win against Greenock Morton.

Here's what you had to say:

Ronnie: Embarrassing. We're not good enough to imagine we can simply stroll through a game at any level. Butland saved the blushes. No pace, no craft. A lot of huffing and puffing, a lucky penalty decision got us out of jail.

PSV on Tuesday, I'm hoping we avoid another Liverpool night. The Europa League is our level. We better get sorted before Celtic.

Nigel: I can't stand the negativity from impatient fans. Let's lay off the team, especially the underrated Lundstram and Goldson. Get behind the team, or we will fail.

Allan: Rangers were dreadful for spells in the game. Some of the new signings are showing promise but Dessers is dreadful and Lammers is like a rabbit in the headlights.

Martin: The only thing positive is we won the game and in the hat for the next round. There was some good stuff. But massive four games coming up, hopefully we can do it. Come on guys, make lbrox rock on Tuesday. But the team needs to perform for this to happen.

Frazer: Very sloppy until going 1-0 down and the changes. Dessers will hopefully get a boost to his confidence with the goal. Slight improvements across the new signings but not gelling well as a team yet. Tuesday will be a different team, set up and system so can’t go on that performance today, otherwise we may as well hand the win to PSV now.

Chris: Hagi needs to start on Tuesday. Big difference once he came on with the linking up and chances created. The new boys have had time but we need to bring in the likes of Hagi and Roofe.

Bobby: Simply not good enough. Michael Beale has a lot of work ahead of him if he is to turn these Rangers players into proper title contenders. Right now the team are lacking in any creativity up front and seem to always be happy to ship the first goal to teams. Huge improvement needed or the manager will be under pressure.

  14. Yfeko 'improving every day' at Rangerspublished at 11:35 20 August

Johnly Yfeko admits he still has a lot to learn after making his Rangers debut in Saturday's 2-1 Viaplay Cup win over Morton at Ibrox.

The 20-year-old defender made a vital stoppage-time tackle on George Oakley to deny the striker an opportunity to equalise.

Yfeko, who joined from Leicester in January 2022, told Rangers TV: "I enjoyed it. It was a good game.

"We could have done better with the result, got more goals, but I really enjoyed it for my first game.

"I’ve got a lot to learn and I just need to keep working hard on the training pitch and taking information I’m being given.

"It’s been really good. The coaching staff have put a lot of faith in me, they’ve been working with me really closely behind the scenes.

"I just feel like I’m improving every day, getting smarter every day and it’s just thanks to them for putting so much time and effort into my development.

"I’m just trying to get better. I’m just trying to see where I can get to and hopefully staying in the first team, but I just want to focus on my own development."

  15. 'I've never felt better' - Hagi 'disappointed' by lack of game time at Rangerspublished at 09:29 20 August

Ianis Hagi has expressed frustration over his limited role at Rangers but insisted he respects manager Michael Beale's decisions.

The 24-year-old Romanian was once again among the substitutes for Saturday's 2-1 win over Greenock Morton in the Viaplay Cup.

"Every footballer wants to play," he said. "I'm obviously disappointed by the situation but I respect the gaffer's decisions. That doesn't mean I agree with them but I respect them – he's the manager of this club.

"I'm a simple guy, I just love football. I train 100% on a daily basis. I come back from a one-year injury, they know who I am and they know my history at this football club, what I've done.

"I've won at this football club individual and collected trophies. I just love to play football. That's what I've done since I started walking as a kid. I'm just happy to be on the pitch and just enjoy my football. This is who I am.

"I've never felt better. I knew I needed a pre-season, I think I'm the only player in this team who has not missed a session this pre-season, plus the start of the season. I've been available for everything. I am happy with where I am physically. My stats are good, some of them are better than prior to injury. I'm in a really good place mentally and physically."

PSV Eindhoven warmed up for their Champions League play-off against Rangers with an impressive 3-1 win over Vitesse in Arnhem.

A fourth consecutive victory of the new season came despite Marco van Ginkel giving the hosts a 19th-minute opener.

Morocco winger Ismael Saibari levelled three minutes after the break, Belgian forward Yorbe Vertessen edged PSV ahead, then Netherlands striker Luuk de Jong, who set up the equaliser, secured the three points from the penalty spot with 20 minutes remaining.

The victory means PSV lead the Eredivisie after the opening two games of the season.

  18. Rangers 2-1 Morton: What did the manager say?published at 15:28 19 August

Rangers manager Michael Beale: "We started the game really well and had big chances, but we didn't take them.

"Morton came and had a right go, they were really well organised. You can see the standard of the Championship is getting better all the time.

"We have a huge four games coming up now and we have players that want to stake a claim, it's important I give them that opportunity.

"No-one will remember this [performance] at the end of the season if we get to where we want to get to."
