  1. Saints loan a 'no brainer' for Downespublished at 16:09 21 August

Southampton have completed a season-long loan of West Ham midfielder Flynn Downes.

The 24-year-old said: “The ambition for the club is obviously to get promoted, to get back in the Premier League, and that enticed me a lot.

“Obviously I’ve worked with the gaffer before. Him (Russell Martin), Gilly (Matt Gill, Assistant Manager), Deano (Dean Thornton, Goalkeeping Coach), Ben (Parker, First Team Tactics & Insights Analyst), I’ve worked with them and I know what they’re about.

“Their attention to detail, the way they play, what they demand of us players – it’s just such a good environment to be in, so it’s a no brainer really.”

  2. Your views on Sunday's gamepublished at 12:30 21 August

    Your Views

We asked for your views on Sunday's game between West Ham and Chelsea.

Here are some of your comments:

    West Ham fans

Michael: No idea how we won that game. We hardly had the ball. But a huge positive attitude from the team. Very sweet that the two most expensive players in the Premier League handed us the game. Fernandez misses one for them and Caicedo gives away the winner for us. Antonio brilliant too.

Brenda: James Ward-Prowse will be a real asset for West Ham. So sad to see him go from Southampton, but has to move on with career.

Mike: That was hard. Chelsea were all over us for most of game, but we showed character and the second half played much better.

Steve: Unbelievable win for West Ham, great resilience especially when down to 10. We took our chances and defended incredibly well. This team are going to frustrate many teams in the Premier. Early days but both new signings looked good.

    Chelsea fans

Jason: Another difficult and disappointing season ahead, given we can’t even beat West Ham. We can already forget about top for. As soon as West Ham went 2-1 up it was all over with 30 mins left. Mudryk needs to be loaned out, no composure. Sterling is back to his best but the defence is getting worse.

Lewis: First half was good, second was awful. Too defensive in changes when they went down to 10. Need a creator in midfield and go back to 4-3-3. All the money we have spent and Enzo is not the answer to be a ball player.

Fossie: What a sorry affair! If you can't convert penalties you don't deserve to win. If you can tell me where £115m was spent, I would love know. What a waste on one player. No point having all that possession if you don't score. If Poch doesn't sort this out soon, he'll be gone.

Andy: Same old story of making chances and not converting them. Add to that the misery of missing a penalty. Sterling probably played his best game but players have to hold their hands up. We still need a goal machine up front. We need to knuckle down and play as we did after West Ham scored first, otherwise it's going to be a long season.

  3. West Ham 'suits' Ward-Prowsepublished at 12:04 21 August

West Ham "did what they needed to do" to get their first win of the Premier League season on Sunday, according to former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha.

The Hammers survived a Chelsea penalty and being a man down after Nayef Aguerd received a second yellow card, to come out 3-1 winners against their London rivals.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast, Onuoha said: "West Ham [when they were down to 10-men] still had people who were capable of getting the ball forward, capable of getting bodies in the way and doing really well in staying solid. They did what they needed to do and got a bonus with the penalty at the end.

"I think as a football player sometimes, when you know your back is against the wall and you're playing in front of 60,000 fans you can get yourself up for that. If they went down to 10-men at Stamford bridge with the same situation then it would probably be a bit different, but at home it kind of feels nice and those three points will feel nice to David Moyes."

Former Tottenham midfielder and current Manchester United under-21s player-coach Tom Huddlestone agreed, praising the difference made by new signing James Ward-Prowse.

He added: "West Ham on the back of the Conference League victory would have been itching to start the season. They lost probably their best player in Declan Rice, but to me Ward-Prowse is an excellent addition to the squad.

"You can see in his set-piece deliveries [against Chelsea], the way West Ham play suits him. Energy, organisation, they're a really dangerous team from set-pieces. A lot of people wrote them off last year and a lot of fans were probably asking for Moyes' head to be on the chopping block, but that is a great start to the season for them and they will look to continue that."

  4. West Ham 'played the game plan to a tee' published at 11:28 21 August

    Nayef AguerdImage source, Getty Images

Andros Townsend praised West Ham's performance against Chelsea and told Match of the Day 2 they executed the game plan perfectly: "I’ve played low block for many years, and the number one rule is they are not going through the middle of us, if they are going to score a goal it’s going to be in wide areas. I think West Ham did it brilliantly all game.

"You look at the stats and think Chelsea deserved it and West Ham got lucky, but if you’re in that dressing room as a West Ham player, you think that you played the game plan to a tee and they fully deserved those three points.

"It can be so tough to stay disciplined, when they go against Chelsea and they are protecting a lead, you’ll happily do anything to get the three points."

  7. Analysis: West Ham 3-1 Chelseapublished at 21:04 20 August

    Michael Emons, BBC Sport

West Ham claimed a superb victory against big-spending Chelsea despite playing almost 30 minutes with 10 men.

The Europa Conference League trophy, the Hammers' first silverware since 1980, was on display at the start of the day at London Stadium and the home fans went home happy after a resilient display against the odds from David Moyes' side.

Declan Rice lifted that trophy in June but his replacement, £30m signing from Southampton James Ward-Prowse, produced an impressive debut with two assists for both the opening two goals for the hosts.

Nayef Aguerd headed in Ward-Prowse's corner after only seven minutes before teenager Carney Chukwuemeka equalised, with Chelsea wasting a chance to go ahead as Enzo Fernandez's penalty was saved by Alphonse Areola.

Michail Antonio then raced on to Ward-Prowse's pass to restore West Ham's lead, but the sending off of Aguerd for two bookable offences left the result in the balance.

But Moyes would have been proud of his side's efforts to stay in front despite the one-man deficit for almost 30 minutes, before the victory was sealed through Lucas Paqueta's injury-time penalty.

  8. West Ham 3-1 Chelsea: What Moyes saidpublished at 19:12 20 August

West Ham manager David Moyes to BBC Sport: "Extremely satisfying. They're really good. They played very well last weekend and well today.

"We hung in there at times, were resolute. Even at 10 men we stuck in and got another goal.

"I didn't think we played well in the first half. We got a goal from a James Ward-Prowse assist. We know he's always capable of that. We never played when we got the ball after that and they dominated.

"We tried to get closer to them in the second half and we did. We stuck at it, did the basics well and got the three points.

"We've always been not bad at them [set-pieces]. You can't score without good deliveries. Hopefully he [Ward-Prowse] will bring the good deliveries. Good start for him today.

"I told him [Michail Antonio] it was a brilliant finish, a centre forward's goal.

"Chelsea are a really good side. I'd be surprised if they're not challenghging the top teams.

"The crowd helped today. We're just back from Prague. They'll need to stick with us - we have a few things we need to improve.

"I have no doubt we'll probably get another couple of players in before the window."

  9. 'It was a dream debut for me'published at 19:05 20 August

    James Ward-ProwseImage source, Getty Images

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse speaking to Sky Sports: "It was pretty good [performance], just a direct free-kick missing and a dream debut for me on a personally note.

"It is a special day and first of many, hopefully more to come."

On his set-pieces: "It is big strength of mine and when this place was empty we practiced and then the pressure is on to perform on the big stage.

"You can feel the stadium pick up in energy when we get a set-piece and we have big boys in the box.

"If the ball is right and the run's right, there you go, you take a goal every day of the week.

"Every set-piece we get there is an opportunity.

"We went up against a very good team, and we showed some real resilience."

On the pressure of replacing Declan Rice: "Everyone knows the impact of what Declan Rice did for this club, I have come in here and have to show what James Ward-Prowse can bring to the club and that's my mentality."

West Ham United claimed a rousing London derby win against big-spending Chelsea despite playing almost 30 minutes with only 10 men.

The Hammers were 2-1 ahead when defender Nayef Aguerd, who opened the scoring with a seventh-minute header, was sent off in the 67th minute for his second bookable offence.

But Chelsea could not force an equaliser and then conceded a late third through Lucas Paqueta's penalty in the fifth minute of added time.

Teenager Carney Chukwuemeka scored his first goal for the Blues to make it 1-1 but Enzo Fernandez wasted a chance to put them ahead when his penalty was saved by Alphonse Areola.

  12. Hammers unveil third kitpublished at 15:36 19 August

West Ham players model their new kitImage source, West Ham

West Ham have unveiled their new third kit for the 2023-24 season.

The navy strip features a triangular pattern "which immediately recognises the emblematic floodlight design at London Stadium, a theme echoed in the sky-blue triangle details at the V-neck collar and sleeves".

The Hammers used fans from all over the world to unveil the kit in their video.

The club said: "From New York to Nashville. Scandinavia to Sydney. Miami to Czechia. And across India and Africa we see Hammers fans around the world wearing a piece of our London home."

  13. Sutton's predictions: West Ham v Chelseapublished at 11:15 19 August

Chris Sutton will be making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of rivals. Next up is DJ, producer and Newcastle fan Anish Kumar.

    Sutton's Predictions with Anish Kumar

    Sutton's prediction: 1-2

I really feel for West Ham boss David Moyes because of the way the Hammers have gone about their transfer business this summer. Now there is the possibility of losing Lucas Paqueta to Manchester City too, which hardly helps.

Chelsea were very good in the second half against Liverpool last weekend and they will be even better if Moises Caicedo goes straight into their team, to partner Enzo Fernandez in the centre of midfield.

You can see what Mauricio Pochettino is trying to do with Chelsea and they are a better team, with better players, than West Ham. Even though they are still fitting together as a team, that will be reflected in the result.

It's putting the ball in the net that I think could still be Chelsea's biggest problem, especially in the short-term. Nicolas Jackson looks lively up front, but can he step up with the goals they need?

West Ham will sit in and counter, but I am backing Chelsea to have a little bit too much quality.

Anish's prediction: Chelsea will be an interesting watch this year with so many comings and goings. West Ham have had a difficult transfer window, losing Declan Rice and struggling to bring in players. 0-2

  14. Moyes on summer singings, Maguire and London Stadium returnpublished at 14:01 18 August

David Moyes has been speaking to the media before Sunday's Premier League game against Chelsea.

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Moyes says new summer signings James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez are both available for Sunday's game: "James has Premier League experience and has scored and assisted goals throughout his career. Edson will bring us something as well and I hope both will be great signings for us."

    • When asked about Harry Maguire, Moyes said: "We did have an offer for Harry Maguire and at the end we haven’t been able to take it further. We’re looking at several players at other clubs."

    • He provided an update on Jesse Lingard: "We’ve not considered a deal for Jesse at the moment. He’s training to get back fit and in decent condition and he’ll be here next week as well. Players need four or five weeks in pre-season and he’s no different to anyone else."

    • On returning to London Stadium after the Hammers' Europa Conference League triumph, Moyes said: "We want everyone to come in the way they were in the East End of London and on the night in Prague. We’re looking forward to being back here at home and I’m sure it will be a great atmosphere."

    • Moyes was full of praise for new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino and said: "Pochettino has been here before and knows the league well. He’s very experienced now and it’s always good to go up against the best managers. He’s in that bracket."
